Lot Essay

Praised for his Paris street scenes, Luigi Loir's paintings were collected by an international audience. He had begun his studies in 1853 at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Parme and in 1865 he was accepted for the first time to the Paris Salon. After the Franco-Prussian war he abandonded large-scaledecoration and began to paint Paris scenes exclusively. He won a thrid class medal in 1879 and a second class medal in 1889. In 1898 he was decorated as a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur.
