Gustave Emile Couder first exhibited at the Salon of 1869. He was a student of Wasselon and built his reputation with his elaborate still lifes of flowers and fruits. He was a member of the Société des Artistes Français when this work was painted. In a critique of the Salon of 1888 Paul Leprieur wrote, "..there are excellent examples of the new style, very fresh, very decorative, and where the Japonism has influenced us" (P. Leprieur, La Peintur au Salon de 1888, Paris, 1888, p. 46).
