Corrodi was one of the leading Italian Orientalists of the nineteenth century. Following his apprenticeship in his father's studio and at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, he studied in Paris in 1872. He was then presented to the British Royal Family, who purchased several of his works. The artist exhibited regularly until his death; at the Royal Academy in 1881, at the annual exhibition of the Amatori e Cultori di Belli Arti in Rome in 1894 and at the Expsoition Universelle in Paris in 1900.
Caroline Juler writes of the artist, "Although Corrodi worked in the second half of the century, he was allied more by his style to the academic tradition of the first half of the century. His technique is remarkable for the subdued and meticulous gradations of colour, his games with shadow and light, and his inspirational subjects, as much abstract as narrative." (C.Juler, es Orientalistes de L'Ecole Italienne, Paris, 1992, p.106)
The Galata bridge was constructed by the English in 1875 and links Pera to Stanbul. Our version is probably the prime version of this renowned composition, depicting the incessant flow of humanity at the nucleus of the city.
