The first circa 1917-18, the second late 18th Century, the remainder circa 1860 and later
The first entirely of steel, with broad double-edged leaf-shaped blade, folding disc hand-guard, and grip (probably originally with cord binding) terminating in a sharpened pommel; the second with slightly curved single-edged fullered blade stamped on both faces with cutler's initials 'SH' within a running fox (for Samuel Harvey of Birmingham), brass hilt with heart-shaped guard engraved '6/30' and 'M:Lancashire', two side-bars, and brass barley-twist grip (quillon missing)

Lot Essay

The machine-gunner's sidearm is an extremely rare example of a limited number of weapons acquired by Lord Howard de Walden when commanding a battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 1917. These weapons were used by the battalion's Mills Bombers and Lewis Gunners, and would normally have been carried in a webbing scabbard
