Decorated in takabori with a mountainous landscape with a boat, the reverse with pine groves jutting out to the water, the border, ten and chi decorated in gilt nunome zogan, the himotoshi in gilt (slight old wear), unsigned, 19th century, with a coral ojime and a dark wood hako netsuke

Lot Essay

The scenes depicted here have probably derived from the famous Hsiao Hsiang pa ching 'Eight views of Hsiao and Hsiang Rivers (in Hunan)' painted by the eleventh century master Sung Ti, whose influence has been seen among many succeeding artists. In Japan, the Former Regent Konoe, on his visit to Province of Omi in 1500, is believed to have named eight views around Lake Biwa, no doubt, based on the Chinese series. Ando Hiroshige, in 1830s, produced one of his masterpieces Omi hakkei 'Eight views of Omi (Lake Biwa)'
