DOROTHY KILGALLEN GAVEL FROM "WHAT'S MY LINE"
CBS Television, 1950-1967
A small gavel presented to Dorothy Kilgallen, the Broadway and Hollywood gossip columnist who was a longtime panelist on the popular TV gameshow. Constructed of a dark-colored wood, this piece has a silver metal band around the head inscribed with Dorothy Kilgallen The Lady with the Radar Brain What's My Line W.C.B.S. Kilgallen was a 'woman about town' in New York in the 1950s and even turned up in a Truman Capote book, 'Music for Chameleons,' in the chaper about Marilyn Monroe who Capote quoted as saying "...that bitch Dorothy Kilgallen..." Kilgallen later died a mysterious death in 1965, claiming to have information about the assassination of JFK. This gavel was consigned by Kilgallen's goddaughter who received it as a gift from her.
