Lot Essay

John Broadwood & Sons, the piano makers, had spare capacity in the early post-Great War era (as did many other businesses), and gramophones were an obvious diversification. The patent for the wood tone-arm, of April 1919, (No. 135627) was granted to A.R.Rastall, the Patent being mainly concerned with the method of manufacturing the bends from solid timber. The Broadwood soundbox has a diecast bezel, but an Exhibition-type stylus bar and a detachable, recessed backplate.
