The inkstone simply carved with a narrow rectangular well, the cover inlaid with mother-of-pearl, carnelian, soapstone, stained walrus ivory and silver to reveal a horse and groom--3¼in. (8.3cm.) long

Lot Essay

The dating is supported by a group of boxes and covers by the same workshop in a Hong Kong private collection, one of which bears the date 1537 and has an exact counterpart carved in red lacquer of the sixteenth Century.
