Lot Essay

Marciano Baptista was of Portuguese origin. He lived and worked in Macao as George Chinnery's assistant before settling in Hong Kong as an art teacher. During the years 1850-1870, Baptista executed a number of watercolour views of Hong Kong. They were renowned for their accuracy. This is the only known oil. Examples of his work can be found in the Hong Kong Museum of Art and other public collections
