FIRST HALF 17TH CENTURY, PROBABLY BY PU CHENG (1582-AFTER 1644)

Carved in low relief to depict a luohan wearing long robes carrying a staff and a straw hat, all resting on three bracket feet--6in. (15cm.) high

Lot Essay

Pu Cheng, originally surnamed Puyang, came from Jinling, Jiangsu Province. He was skilled in the carving of fan-frames and parfumiers, and figures were his most successful subject. For further information on the artist see Ip Yee and Laurance Tam, op. cit., pl. 98, no. 175
