Fans were highly desired objects of the China trade, the earliest dating before the 1730's. Thousands found their way to America and England and had a tremendous vogue from the late 18th to the 19th century. The earliest fan with a view of a Chinese port, painted around 1760, is one depicting Canton, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Views were a popular subject well into the 19th century. The Peabody Museum in Salem has a fan with a view of Whampoa Anchorage dated later than 1850. Other similar examples of this fan can be found in the museum's renowned collection
