Lot Essay

From a sketchbook by King entitled "Sketches taken during the voyage of H.M.S. Scylla". The book had inscribed on the title page "J.Eliot Pringle. From his sincere friend C.C.K."
The artist served on board H.M.S. Scylla as a member of the Royal Marine Artillery on the China Coast. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1865, the year from which these drawings date, and retired as Lt. Colonel. On his return to England, he became Instructor and later Professor of Military Tactics at the Royal Military College
