A FINE PINK-GROUND FAMILLE-ROSE MEDALLION BOWL
DAOGUANG SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Painted on the exterior with four circular panels enclosing different groups of flowers and flowering trees, reserved on a pink sgraffiatio ground painted with formal multi-coloured lotus sprays, the interior painted in underglaze-blue with a central circular panel of a white hare beneath a flowering tree, encircled around the rim by four detached floral sprays--5 7/8in. (15cm.) diam.

Daoguang bowls of this pattern are illustrated in the Ohlmer Collection Catalogue, nos. 144 and 145, in the Roemer Museum, Hildesheim; by Lee, Selected Far Eastern Art in the Yale University Art Gallery, no. 389; and by Lion-Goldschmidt, Les Poteries et Porcelaines Chinoises, pl. XXVIII (D), in the Musee Guimet. A pair in the Hong Kong Museum of Art was included in their Exhibition of the Wonders of the Potters' Palette, 1984, Catalogue no. 103; a pair from the Simon Kwan Collection was included in the Chinese University of Hong Kong Exhibition of Imperial Porcelain of Late Qing, 1983, Catalogue no. 37; and one in the National Gallery of Victoria was included in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Exhibition of Late Chinese Imperial Porcelain, 1980, Catalogue no. 16
