Auguste Borget became the leading French artist to visit the Far East in the first part of the 19th century. In 1836 he embarked on a world tour stopping off on the South China Coast in 1838. He is best known for his lithographs published in his Sketches of China and the Chinese published in 1842. During his stay in Macao he met George Chinnery, who commented on his talents as an artist and influenced him in his work. On his return to France in the 1840's, he exhibited in Paris
