The beetle on a high plinth, the details worn, the base with a striding Athena holding a shield in her left hand, a spear held diagonally, wearing a crested helmet, and a himation over a chiton, the aegis fringed with six snake heads in back, the exergue filled
12 x 44mm.

Lot Essay

Probably made in Naucratis, Egypt. From the same mold as London 315, no. 245 in Boardman, Archaic Greek Gems, Schools and Artists in the Sixth and Early Fifth Centuries B.C.
