A LACQUER WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO) AND WRITING TABLE (BUNDAI)
edo period (19th century), box and table both signed kansai [koma kansai ii (1767-1835)] and with kakihan

The writing set decorated with cockerels and chicks in gold, silver, red and black takamaki-e, and kirigane on a brilliant nashiji ground; the writing box of rectangular shape with rounded corners, decorated on the lid with two cockerels and on the underside of the lid in red, silver and gold hiramaki-e and kirigane with flowering grasses, with silver rim, the interior nashiji, the removable implement tray matching and with fundame rims, containing an inkstone and silver water dropper cast as three hollyhock leaves, two writing brushes, a knife, paper pricker and brush holder, all nashiji, the latter three with silver fittings cast in relief with foliate designs; the rectangular writing table set on four shaped legs with trefoil feet, decorated on the surface with four cockerels and two chicks, with fundame rims and silver fittings designed with foliate scroll, the legs and base nashiji--box 10½ x 9½ x 1 7/8in. (26.7 x 24.6 x 4.9cm.), table 25¼ x 14½ x 5 5/8in. (63.9 x 16.7 x 14.3cm.)
