Property from the Estate of CLAUDETTE COLBERT Claudette Colbert, (1903-1996), with her apple red cheeks, come hither eyes and mesmerizing laugh, once likened to a lioness' purr, brought excitement and humor to the silver screen. Born in Paris 1903, Lily Claudette Chauchoin emigrated with her family to New York City in 1909. By the tender age of 19, Claudette had landed her first major Broadway role. Throughout the early 1920's her characters as beautiful and humorous heroines started to take shape. In 1927, Claudette got her first role in a Hollywood experiment called a "Talkie," and the next 34 years, 65 films and numerous trips back to Broadway is well known history. Some of Claudette's memorable achievements include a 1934 Oscar for Best Actress in "It Happened One Night" in which she co-starred with Clark Gable. By 1938, she was Hollywood's golden girl and the highest paid performer to date, a feat very rare indeed for a woman of the times. Adored and respected, she was requested by many of Hollywood's leading men including Edward G. Robinson, Maurice Chevalier. Gary Cooper, James Stewart and Basil Rathbone just to name a few. In a career that spanned decades, Claudette Colbert is a name that is synonymous with class, beauty and all that represents the magnificence of the silver screen.
