A RARE ART DECO DIAMOND, CARVED CHALCEDONY, LAPIS LAZULI AND ENAMEL BRACELET
Designed as four blue enamel and circular-cut diamond square plaques, each decorated with clusters of multicolored carved chalcedony flowers, with single-cut diamond centers, joined by circular-cut diamond and carved lapis lazuli geometric links, mounted in platinum, circa 1925--7 1/8 ins. long
A work of art is valued not for its intrinsic worth but for its beauty. A rare Old Master painting is a tiny sum in paint and canvas but its exquisitely arranged composition ranks it as a true masterpiece. Jewelry, like fine art, can also be evaluated in these terms. Even though most jewelry is conceived and assessed for its gemstone value, a few are created along artistic parameters. The illustrated bracelet is such an example. Carved chalcedony flowers decorate four panels joined together by octagonally-shaped diamond links; gem materials creating artfully designed vignettes. The underside is finished with the same attention to detail as the front with a hand-engraved flower and leaf motif. Although not signed, this bracelet was created by an important maker, most likely a firm such as Marcus & Co. that was known for their beautifully designed and superbly crafted (albeit often unsigned) jewelry. This bracelet is a true work of art where design, not gemstones, reigns supreme.
