Ltd., [1928]. 14 color illustrations (including title vignette) and two vignettes printed in dark brown; four dark brown text border designs (each appear three times); text printed in dark brown. 12mo, original tan paper boards, covers with color pictorial labels (upper cover shows Peter Rabbit with a post-bag front view; lower cover shows him back view), color pictorial endpapers (Linder 15 [i.e. opposite fig. 14] [double-page design used twice]), spine partially cracked with a few chips, covers soiled and rubbed; margins soiled, light foxing on half-title; cloth slipcase. English Edition, printed September, 1928, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Potter on the half-title: "For Nellie Wilkinson wishing her a Happy New Year from Beatrix Potter Dec 3d 28." "...Nellie was the niece of the two sisters whom Mrs. Potter brought from her home in Stalybridge to work in Bolton Gardens, Hannah and Elizabeth Harper. It seems that Beatrix was very fond of Nellie and gave her a copy of each new book as it came out."--Judy Taylor, In: The Beatrix Potter Society Newsletter No. 61, p. 18. Other copies presented to Nellie by Potter have dates of 1903, 1904, 1910, and 1911; this inscription, dated 1928, shows the long association Beatrix had with her.
