"...Nellie was the niece of the two sisters whom Mrs. Potter brought from her home in Stalybridge to work in Bolton Gardens, Hannah and Elizabeth Harper. It seems that Beatrix was very fond of Nellie and gave her a copy of each new book as it came out."--Judy Taylor, In: The Beatrix Potter Society Newsletter No. 61, p. 18. Other copies presented to Nellie by Potter have dates of 1903, 1904, 1910, and 1911; this inscription, dated 1928, shows the long association Beatrix had with her.
