Margaret ("Daisy") Hammond was the niece of Beatrix Potter's first governess, who rented the next-door cottage to Castle Cottage together with her friend, Cecily Mills. Potter and she became close friends over the years (see lots#). The group of letters from Lane to Hammond mention Potter, Mr. Heelis's health, travel plans, etc.

3 November 1944: "...Mrs. Heelis's trust in you, her affection, couldn't have been more completely expressed - and clearly your near presence is such a comfort & support to Mr. Heelis that everybody who knows him must be grateful to you. He looks a different man, this time, from the man he was last summer; so much more cheerful, & better in every way..." (7)
