PORCELAIN
Lots 254-279
The Beatric Potter porcelain figures in lots 254-279 were collected over a 30 year period. It is important to note that they bear the earliest possible backstamps identifying them essentially as "First Editions." Louis Irvine pictures a total of 24 backstamps in John Beswick & Royal Albert Beatrix Potter Figures & Giftware, pages 71-76. According to Irvine, the very rare G1 backstamp "has only been recorded on a few models including Peter Rabbit (P1098), introduced in 1948, and Johnny Town-Mouse (P1276), introduced in 1954. The most widely used gold backstamp was G2 which appears on models introduced between 1948 and 1965" (Irvine, p. 71). The figures offered here start with the G2 backstamp sequence up to the one currently used by Royal Albert. Over the course of years, some of the figure designs were altered, for example, there are 2 versions of Mrs. Rabbit (see lot 262). In this case, the second version has a later backstamp as will other later version models in this collection.
"Duchess with Flowers" P1355. 1955-67. Handpainted Beswick figure in its original rare box; accompanied with book. The rarest Beswick Potter figurine (this copy is the only one known in original box with book). "Although Beatrix Potter figures were first introduced in 1947, it was not until 20 years later that the first model was withdrawn from the range, the now extremely rare Duchess with Flowers."--Louise Irvine, Beatrix Potter Figures & Giftware (Woodbridge, 1996), p. 77. EXTREMELY RARE.
