In 1920 Dermée, Ozenfant and Le Courbusier founded the magazine L'Esprit nouveau, which ceased in 1925, but was revived by Dermée and Seuphor with Documents internationaux de l'esprit nouveau, a single issue published in 1927. Kertész was selected as the primary photographer for the journal. Kertész's friend Zilzer, a painter from Hungary, had introduced Seuphor to Kertész. Dermée and Seuphor were interested in a diverse perspective for the publication, including the writings of Plato, poetry of Hans Arp, as well as the works of Léger, Mondrain and Schwitters. It is possible that this image captures the group working on the magazine to be published that year. Along with the announcement for Kertész's 1927 exhibition at Au Sacre du Printemps came an invitation for a celebration of the oeuvres d'esprit nouveau. The soirée also acted as a combined opening for Kertész's and Ida Thal's work at the gallery.
