Lot Essay

Like the clochards, the covered chairs heaped behind Notre Dame on the banks of the Seine, display Kertész's interest in observing and recording the ordinary. Beside the dramatic beauty of the cathedral, Kertész has turned his camera to these stoic objects, describing them as sculpture, still life or a simple vision of Parisian life, seen with an evocative Surrealist twist.
