Folio, 393 x 265 (15½ x 10 3/8 in.), 19th-century English diced russia, covers with double gilt fillet panels, stylized palm leaf tools at corners of inner panel, spine gilt in compartments, g.e., joints and extremities rubbed, upper joint split and cover nearly detached, title-leaf and A2 slightly frayed, small marginal hole to Ss6, upper right corner of title and first and last few text leaves stained, some faint residual staining to corners throughout, occasional light dampstaining to other margins. First Folio Edition, woodcut device of the Medici arms on title, smaller cut of same device on Kkk6v, small woodcut medallion portrait of the author on 1A4v, 12-line historiated woodcut opening initial incorporating Medici arms, 8-line initials from the same set elsewhere, woodcut headpieces; ruled in red. Adams G-1508. An octavo edition in two volumes was published by Torrentino the same year.

Willis", contemporary signature on title -- EDWARD, FIRST LORD HERBERT OF CHERBURY (1583-1648), metaphysical poet, philosopher, and historian, his cypher with price (3 L) on title, marginal annotations in Book IV, and extensive notes in Italian at end, filling 6 1/2 pages on KKK5v-KKK6v (blank except for woodcut device on KKK6v) and 2 flyleaves -- Earl of Powis (sale, Sotheby's, 20 March 1967, lot 149, 38 to Quaritch).
