This painting is recorded in Wood's diary for 12 March 1879 as Received from Thomas Reid for Spelling It Out $200 cash.

The present work may have been illustrated in Truth magazine in November 1899 as Reading the News. This painting will be included in Paul Worman's forthcoming monograph on the artist's work, to be published by the Wood Art Gallery, Montpelier, Vermont.
