Lot Essay

Tohan is the grandson of Unkoku Togan (1547-1618) and the youngest son of Unkoku Toeki (1591-1644), under whom he studied. He succeeded his brother Toyo as the head of the Unkoku family, styling himself Sesshu VI. He received the title Hokkyo in 1664 and Hogen in 1675.
