A LARGE EARTHENWARE VASE
meiji period (late 19th century), signed satsuma chikusai and with Shimazu mon

Of ovoid form with cylindrical neck ending in an extended, flat rim, decorated in colored enamels and gilt with large hydrangea and smaller chrysanthemum blossoms over a woven 'bamboo' fence, moulded in low relief to the body and covered in teal-blue enamel, the base of the neck ornamented with a collar of colored clouds on a deep blue ground and the neck encircled by a band of floral diaperwork, the shoulders gilded with staggered clusters of clouds--12¼in. (31.3cm.) high
