A LARGE EARTHENWARE VASE
meiji period (late 19th century), signed dai nihon matsumoto hozan
Of ovoid form with wide, cylindrical neck and flaring rim, decorated in colored enamels and gilt with a scene of mushroom gathering on one side and with figures enjoying a garden of flowering peonies and wisteria on the other, all on a midnight blue ground decorated with gilt foliage and crests and with two side panels of gilt fans, the neck decorated with further gilt blossoms, crests and diaperwork between bands of dense geometric patterns, also gilt--24in. (61cm.) high
