Lot Essay
Patterns in Gillow's Estimate Sketch Book dating from the late 1780's and early 1790's feature the same palm-wrapped fluted legs (see L.Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, 1995, figs.86-87). Pieces from a Gillows commission for George Wilbraham at Delamere House also share this pattern leg such as two tables sold by Christie's London, 7 February 1997, lots 10-11. Other examples of this model of sideboard have been sold at auction: a virtually identical sideboard but with pendant foliate carving to the angles was sold by Sotheby's New York, 25 April 1981, lot 133; another similar also with carved details was sold by Christie's London, 17 April 1980 (illustrated in G.Beard and J.Goodison, eds., English Furniture 1500-1840, 1987, p.192, fig.1).
