Lot Essay
The distinctive flanking fasces-filled pilasters relate to a group of bookcases of which one is labelled by Robert Herring and Son., cabinet-makers and upholsterers of Fleet Street, and supplied by them to the Lord Mayor's Mansion House in the City of London. That bookcase was illustrated by Stair and Co. in the National Art Collections Fund Review, London, 1989. A third related bookcase is attributed to Marsh and Tatham and has lower doors mounted with the same wreathed owls as on the Anglesey Desk and was sold Christie's London, 8 July 1993, lot 109.
