Lot Essay

This lot was probably acquired in the 1840s by an ancestor of the 1990 vendor who was collecting extensively at that period. He was buying large quantities of furniture from the dealer Edward Holmes Baldock as well as importing bronzes and sculpture from Italy. In 1869 he also bought Hampden House, in Green Street, London, complete with the collection of French furniture and objects formed by A.H. Oswald.
