Lot Essay

A. Hepplewhite and Co.'s Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, pl. 8, published an immensely influential design for a pierced oval chairback filled with Prince-of-Wales feathers. Among its variations the anthemia proved most popular in England and the Prince-of-Wales feathers in Salem, Massachusetts.
