The molded rectangular shelf above a frieze with sphinxes holding husks and centered by an urn, the pilaster jambs with oval medallions centered by sunflowers, with modern aperture lining

Lot Essay

The elegant ornament of this chimneypiece was popularised by R. & J. Adam's Works in Architecture, 1773-9, and it relates in particularly to patterns published in M. Pergolesi's Designs for Various Ornaments, 1784.
