Lot Essay

In the early 20th Century, these vases were owned by Baroness Burton, a leading English collector of porcelain and French furniture. She and her husband were the then owners of Chesterfield House, the superb rococo palace built from 1746 for 1st Lord Chesterfield by Isaac Ware. A series of photographs of its famous interiors were taken by Bedford Lemare circa 1910 shown them overflowing with Lady Burton's collection, including these vases on the landing at the top of the stairs.
A second pair of massive famille rose vases, of this size, on exactly the same type of stand and also from Baroness Burton's collection, were sold in these Rooms, 20-21 March 1997, lot 434.
