MADISON, DOLLEY PAYNE, First Lady. Autograph letter signed ("DP Madison") to Mrs. Ellicott, Washington, D.C., 8 February 1839. 1 page, 4to, 250 x 190 mm. (9 7/8 x 7½ in.). Fine.
An affectionate letter to a friend: "I am very grateful for...the continuance of that kindness which was extended to me on our early acquaintance and which has been ever since a precious remembrance to me. I have read with great interest the testimony...of respect and affection for Elizabeth Thomas whose virtue and trials will live in the memory of her excellent family. The account of our estimable friend Deborah Stables being restored to health is a cause for rejoicing to those who knew the purity of her character, even tho' thay may not see her again. I trust she will long enjoy the consolation of witnessing the prosperity of her large family. It would give me great satisfaction to meet you both again and sometimes the hope of doing so comes over my mind...I shall remember you both with constant affection..."
