Lot Essay

These urns were probably purchased by Thomas 7th Earl of Elgin from the Parisian marchand-mercier Martin-Eloi Lignereaux (c. 1750-1809) around 1804. Elgin, the Ambassador to Constantinople from 1799 to 1803 is best known today for having removed whole sections of the frieze from the Parthenon to bring back to England.
