Lot Essay

The year, in which the present drawing was executed, was of particular importance in Menzel's career. In 1884 he finished and exhibited the last of his paintings on the theme of urban life, the Piazza d'Erbe in Verona, in Berlin, and at Easter, the Nationalgalerie devoted an exhibition to him to mark fifty years of his activity as an artist. The present drawing does not seem to be related to any of Menzel's paintings, and it is likely that the young man was one of the numerous people the artist encountered on the streets of Berlin.
