Lot Essay

When the Spanish colonized the New World, they brought with them the concept of society divided into nobles and plebeians. Spaniards became the aristocracy of the Americas, regardless of their origins and occupations. The Casta paintings reflect the complex process of mestizaje among the Indians, Spanish and Black, while also revealing the strict social structure imported by the Spanish.
