Lot Essay

Conceived in 1970 for the cover of Time, 'The Marshall' depicts John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn in the movie 'True Grit', a role for which the actor was awarded the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' award for Best Actor in 1969. The sculpture proved extremely popular and was subsequently edited in three sizes and two finishes (patinated and painted).
