Lot Essay

Many reproductions of Paul Revere's engraving of the Boston Massacre were made in the nineteenth century; of these, William F. Stratton's facsimile is particularly faithful to the original, both in its recreation of the engraving, and in its fidelity to the Revere/Christian Remick color scheme.

William Stratton (1803-1846) is listed as an engraver in the Boston Directories covering the years 1827 to 1834. For a discussion of Paul Revere's engravings and their reproductions, see Clarence S. Brigham, Paul Revere's Engravings, New York, 1969, pp. 52-78.
