A RARE AMISH COTTON QUILTED COVERLET
LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, CIRCA 1920

Worked in the Diamond-in-the-Square pattern with a blue diamond stitched with floral and animal figures including birds, lamb, horse, chicken, and duck framed by green peony and tulip-stitched spandrels surrounded by a blue peony-stitched inner border and a green tulip-stitched outer border, with a blue binding--66 x 66in.

Lot Essay

Amish quilts with pictorial stitching are extremely rare. The choice of bucolic animal figures, together with the small dimensions of this quilt, suggest that it was worked for a child.
