12 vols., bound in 6, folio, 383 x 258 mm., contemporary Dutch blindstamped vellum, seven spine compartments, red morocco gilt spine labels, the first vol. with small crack to the vellum at lower compartment of front joint, spines darkened and a few stains to the bindings, vol. 3: plate 62 with tiny hole, vol. 11: plate 1 with small tear, plate 53 and text disbound and laid in.

FIRST EDITION. 2 engraved title-pages (vols. 1 and 3) and 794 numbered engraved plates on 791 sheets (vol. 11: plts. 16/17, vol. 12: plts. 36/37/38 each on one sheet), all but 75 double-page, by B. Stoopendael after drawings by Matteus a St. Joseph, with engraved captions in Latin, Malabar, Arabic and Brahmi script (descriptions in text add Dutch and Portuguese). Text edited by Arnoldus Syen, Johannes Casearius, Jan Commelijn, Johannes Munnicks, Theodorus Janson ad Almeloveen and Abraham à Poot.

THE FIRST MAJOR FLORA OF THE EAST INDIES. "...one of the most celebrated of pre-Linnaean books....It remains an important contribution to the botany and ethnology of Southern India" (Blunt & Stearn). Rheede tot Draakestein (1637-1691) was governor of Malabar 1669-1676 for the Dutch East India Company and was appointed the head of the Company's operations in India in 1684.
