4 vols, bound in 8 (4 of text, 4 of plates), folio, 405 x 245 mm., contemporary French mottled calf gilt, g.e. old repairs and wear to bindings, text vols. 1 and 3 with some dampstaining in upper portions also affecting 2 portraits, frontispiece and 2 engraved titles, partial loss of text numeral on G2 in vol. 2; plates 233-273 (plate vol. I) dampstained at lower portions, plates 503-525 (plate vol. II) dampstained at upper portions, five plates in plate vol. I with slight pigment losses from adhesion to facing pages; small tears in plates 931 and 961; plate 892 bound upside down and cropped, plate 541 shaved.
Haid's reissue of the first edition. Parallel text in Latin and German. 4 engraved titles in Latin with letters heightened in gold and red (each dated 1745); mezzotint portrait of Weinmann by Haid after Hirschmann with mezzotint emblematic frontispiece of Ceres attended by Hippocrates, Time and a nymph by Haid after Baumgartner on facing page in vol. I, mezzotint portrait of Ambrose Bieler by Haid after Hirschmann facing title in vol. III, these three mezzotints printed in blue; 1025 engraved and mezzotint plates, printed in colors and finished by hand after Georg Dionysius Ehret, N. Asamin and others by J.J. Haid, J.E. Ridinger and J. Seuter, 14 of them folding.
THE FIRST WORK TO USE COLOR-PRINTED MEZZOTINT SUCCESSFULLY, representing a technical and artistic advance over its precursors, Martyn's Historia plantarum rariorum (see lot 105 in this catalogue) and the Society of Gardeners' Catalogus plantarum. The work is based on Weinmann's collection of plants and was financed by him. It contains G.D. Ehret's first published botanical illustrations. Ehret served his apprenticeship as a botanical draughtsman under Weinmann and was so severely exploited that they severed their professional relationship and Ehret's contribution is nowhere acknowledged.
