John Henry Starin (1825-1909) was instrumental in developing the transportation system in the harbor and city of New York. In 1859, his Starin City River and Harbor Transportation Lines centralized the freight handling in the New York harbor. His innovative solutions to what was a chaotic problem coincided with the interests of the Vanderbilt family who were developing their railroad interests at that time. Starin became a close business associate of them. Later, at the turn of the century, he was instrumental in establishing the subway system in New York.
