DIOSCORIDES, PEDACIUS. De materia medica. Venice: Aldus Manutius, 1518. 4to, nineteenth-century dark red straight-grained morocco, covers with blind-tooled borders, spine blind-tooled in four compartments, gilt-lettered in two, g.e., light rubbing to hinges and board edges, bottom one-third of title-leaf defective and renewed, washed, partially effacing extensive marginalia (some in Greek) in an early humanist hand, occasional finger-soiling. Second edition and second Aldine edition of the Greek text as edited by Girolamo Rossi and Francesco Torresani. Printed in Greek and roman letter, woodcut printer's device on title and last page. This version of the text, the basis for most subsequent editions, includes an anonymous greek poem in 190 hexameters describing 12 different plants. Adams D653; Durling 1133; Renouard, p.82, 2.
