FUCHS, LEONHARD. Plantarum et Stirpium Icones. Lyons: 1595. 8vo, 171 x 114mm, contemporary panelled calf, a thin roll, corner ornaments and central lozenge stamped in silver, initials "FOS" and date 1601 stamped in silver on upper cover, red edges, wear at 2 corners and spine extremities, slight worming to blank margin of first few leaves. Title ornament, headpiece, 517 woodcut illustrations of plants, 2 ornamental initials, pages ruled in red. Nissen BBI 661.
Although claiming to be a Lyons imprint, the sheets of the book are those printed at Basel by Isingrin in 1545/1549, to which a new title and index of Latin names has been added. The paper of all three editions is identical, indicating that Isingrin originally printed a very large quantity in 1545 for both his Latin and German editions, reissued it in 1549, and the remainder apparently passed to an anonymous printer at Lyons by the end of the century. An early owner, presumably the F.O.S. for whom the book was bound, has fully annotated this copy, referring to Mattioli, Pena, Camerarius and Tabernaemontanus, and providing index of German names and an index of plants grouped according to which ailments they remedy.
Provenance: F.O.S., binding -- Kenneth K. Mackenzie; Horticultural Society of New York, bookplate and blindstamp.
