The two ionic pilasters, each flanked by oak boughs, paterae and flaming urns, forming a Temple of Minerva with trophy of arms between two figures of the goddess, one in armor bearing a shield with the head of Medusa, the other as the personification of learning, the shaped oblong base applied with paterae and leafy scrolls, the entablature supporting sejant lions, the case, draped with ribbon-tied oak and laurel boughs, flanked by laurel scrolls and surmounted by an eagle, the white enamel dial with roman chapters, pierced gilt leafy hands, the movement with anchor escapement, thread suspension to sunburst Apollo mask pendulum, striking the hour and half-hour on bell by means of countwheel, 1780s--27½in. (70cm.) high
