Lot Essay
The relief was designed by the illustrator F.O.C. Darley, and was distributed by John H. Williams of 353 Broadway with the following description. "This exquisite Work of Art we furnish, in the separate styles submitted, at $75 and $150 per dozen, framed complete, a price much lower than anything of like merit has ever been introduced to the public. We have thought best to present the work ready framed, because of the delay usually experienced in getting up suitable styles, and the necessity that exists of putting a work of this character promptly before the public. The styles of frames will be found tasty and appropriate, and being manufactured in quantities, are placed at a price less than they can be got up in a more limited way." (Sharp, p. 162) The present arched wood frame is probably the original.
