2 vols., folio, 375 x 305 mm., on guards, late 19th-century olive-green half morocco gilt, t.e.g., spines faded, plate 111 in vol. 2 slightly smudged, slight spotting and faint discoloration of support sheets affecting about 15 plates, some text foxed.
FIRST EDITION. Half-title, pictorial lithographed additional title and dedication, 151 lithographed plates (numbered 1-150 + 124b), all by two (nos. 124b and 137) hand-colored or partly colored, after S. Minsinger and others.
THE FIRST COLOR-PLATE FLORA OF JAPAN and the second flora of Japan, preceded only by Thunberg. Siebold (1796-1866), a German physician, natural scientist and orientalist, entered the service of the V.O.C. and spent seven years in Japan between 1823 and 1830, returning later between 1859 and 1862. His wide ranging studies added enormously to European knowledge of the country. The pictorial title and dedication are not found in all copies and are of interest. The title shows the monument erected by Siebold in memory of Kaempfer and Thunberg, his predecessors in the scientific study of the Japanese flora, on the island of Dezima where the Dutch were once confined. The dedication is to Anna Paulowna, wife of William II of the Netherlands. Both bear imprints showing that the lithography of these sheets was executed in Japan (Plesch sale catalogue, part 3, lot 700). Rare.
