Lot Essay

Delachaux, born of Swiss parents, is known for his interiors and genre subjects such as Taking a Rest sold in these rooms on December 3, 1996 as lot 95. Living in Philadelphia, he exhibited genre works at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1879 to 1898, at the National Academy of Design in New York from 1881 to 1883 and at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1896 and 1897. Though Delachaux resided in Paris after 1888, he continued to exhibit in the United States, yet his works focused more on the lives of French peasants.
